The fourth event commemorating our museum's fiftieth anniversary is a special exhibition of the ukiyoe in the Yamatane Museum of Art's collection. Our collection includes works by Suzuki Harunobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Kitagawa Utamaro, Tōshūsai Sharaku, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Hiroshige I, with a large number of superb works by those six well-known ukiyoe masters. The scale of the collection is matched by the excellent quality of the works' preservation, for which it is highly regarded among ukiyoe experts. The collection includes three of Sharaku's highly individualistic ōkubi-e portraits of actors, which thus account for a remarkably high proportion of the collection. Hiroshige I's archetypical series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, is also included in the original Hōeidō edition. Most are prints from the first state; moreover, they also include the titles. These are thus extremely valuable examples of his extant work. This exhibition thus provides not only a comprehensive view of our collection but also, through it, an opportunity to partake of the essence of ukiyoe, of works whose fascination transcends borders and eras.
In association with our fiftieth anniversary, the exhibition also includes a special display of works by modern and contemporary nihonga artists, including Kobayashi Kokei and Kayama Matazō, who had a deep connection our museum.
