Exhibition Overview
During the Edo period, a diverse array of highly individual artists emerged, and their unique styles took the world by storm. Their works continue to fascinate people to this day. With this exhibition, the Yamatane Museum of Art showcases popular artists active in the Edo period, presenting renowned ukiyo-e and Edo-period paintings side by side.
Our museum’s collection includes superb works in a good state of conservation by the six giants of ukiyo-e: Suzuki Harunobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Kitagawa Utamaro, Tōshūsai Sharaku, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Hiroshige. This exhibition will display all those select works, divided between its first and second periods. It also introduces a delightfully exciting selection of ukiyo-e, including giga, farcical pictures by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, presented thanks to the cooperation of the famous Ōta Memorial Museum of Art, which specializes in ukiyo-e. Thanks to the NHK Taiga historical drama featuring Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the ukiyo-e publisher or hanmoto, ukiyo-e have been attracting considerable attention this year. Please enjoy the fascinating world of ukiyo-e at our museum.
This exhibition also includes many masterpieces of Edo-period paintings by famous artists, including Court Ladies Enjoying Wayside Chrysanthemums (Important Cultural Property) by Iwasa Matabei, View of Mt. Kunō (Important Cultural Property) by Tsubaki Chinzan, and works by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, Ike no Taiga, and Itō Jakuchū.
Enjoy this mesmerizing collaboration between renowned art world stars in an exhibition showcasing their masterpieces in ukiyo-e and Edo-period paintings.
Finally, we would like to take the opportunity presented by this exhibition to express our deep gratitude to Ōta Memorial Museum of Art and all those whose unstinting efforts and cooperation have contributed to the exhibition’s successful realization.
